Channeling Your Inner Rock Star: Lisa’s 80s Lita Ford Inspired Studio Photoshoot

Have you ever held onto a dream for years, waiting for the "perfect time" to finally put yourself first?

If you are like most women I work with, you probably have a running list of things you want to do for yourself "someday." Maybe it’s taking a solo trip, starting that passion project, or booking a transformational photoshoot experience to celebrate who you are right now. But life gets in the way. Schedules clash, family priorities take over, or self-doubt creeps in with the familiar whisper: "Maybe I should lose ten pounds first" or "I'm just not photogenic enough for something like that."

When Lisa first reached out to book a photoshoot with me a couple of years ago, she was so excited to finally make it happen. But then, life happened. Unexpected turns meant she had to cancel, putting her dream session on hold.

Lisa had wanted to do a session for years before that initial inquiry. But here is the beautiful thing about dreams: they don't expire. Fast forward to recently, everything finally lined up, and Lisa walked through my studio doors to create the exact, uninhibited experience she had been envisioning for years.

And let me tell you she absolutely rocked it.

Bringing an 80s Rock Aesthetic to Life in the Studio

When Lisa and I sat down to plan the creative vision for her session, one thing became abundantly clear right away: Lisa has a fierce, edgy soul. Her primary style inspiration was none other than the legendary 80s rock icon, Lita Ford.

We set out to create a session that felt dark, moody, edgy, and completely unapologetic.

Crafting the Stylized Vision

To capture that true 80s rocker chick vibe, every detail had to be deliberate:

  • Wardrobe & Accessories: Lisa brought an incredible array of dark, edgy outfits paired with layers of chunky silver jewelry.

  • Prop Details: Lisa managed to borrow a couple of gorgeous electric guitars for the shoot, giving her something physical and raw to interact with.

  • Studio Atmosphere: We broke out the studio smoke machine to give her portraits that atmospheric, stage-lit, live-concert feel.

We even recreated specific, exact side-by-side replicas of iconic Lita Ford photos from the 1980s. Seeing Lisa hold those guitars amidst the swirling haze in the studio, fully stepping into her power, was a reminder of why I love doing what I do.

Overcoming Session Prep Overwhelm: Narrowing Down the Vision

Planning a highly stylized photoshoot is thrilling, but it can also feel overwhelming! During our pre-session planning phase, Lisa came to the table with so many incredible ideas and outfit options that we hit a temporary point of contention: she wanted to do way too many things for a single shoot!

It is a common scenario during session prep. When you’ve waited years to do something for yourself, you want to bring every outfit, every accessory, and every idea you've ever saved on Pinterest.

I always tell my clients: We have to pare it down to give each concept the time and polish it deserves.

"Instead of rushing through twenty different outfits and feeling frantic, we choose the best of the best. We focus on quality over quantity so you can actually relax and enjoy the pampering."

We edited her wardrobe down to a tight, high-impact selection of outfits that fit the edgy rock aesthetic perfectly. This allowed us to slow down, focus on fully-guided posing, dial in the drama with our studio lighting, and give every shot the artistic attention it deserved.

What Happens When You Have an Outside-the-Box Photoshoot Idea?

People often look at a photographer's portfolio and assume, "Well, I don’t see them doing X, so they probably won't do it for me." Clients often ask me, "Hey, I didn't see this specific style on your site, but could we try something like this?"

The answer is almost always YES!

I thrive on creative challenges and love stepping outside my standard workflow to build custom, highly stylized sessions. However, executing a unique concept requires open communication and realistic expectations:

  1. Feasibility Check: I will always give you an honest, professional assessment of whether an idea can be executed safely and beautifully within our studio setup.

  2. Styling & Budgeting: If a concept requires specialized props, wardrobe, or set pieces that I don’t carry in the studio wardrobe, you may need to source those items or cover the added production costs.

The Evolution of Confidence: Why Returning Clients Take Bigger Creative Risks

In my years as a portrait photographer, I’ve noticed a consistent pattern:

  • Session 1 (The Confidence Session): For 90% of women, their first shoot is about proving to themselves that they can step in front of the camera, feel safe, look incredible, and love their photos. It’s about overcoming camera anxiety and disarming self-doubt.

  • Sessions 2, 3, & 4 (The Creative Exploration): Once a client experiences how easy, guided, and empowering the process is, the fear evaporates. Returning clients come back to explore totally different sides of their personality—whether that’s an edgy rock-and-roll theme, a vintage concept, or something bold and adventurous.

Lisa’s session was a testament to what happens when you give yourself permission to step outside the box and try something bold.
